Yamaha outboard fuel octane recommendations. All the newer Yamaha outboards and their components have been designed to withstand the corrosive properties of ethanol fuels so if you cant find an ethanolfree gas pump in your area or you prefer to run the E10 gasoline I suggest you run the manufacturers stated octane fuel and also subscribe to the major brand-name fuel suppliers that add detergents and lubricants like Techroline to their fuels. Octane ratings measure a gasolines ability to resist engine knock a rattling or pinging sound that results from premature ignition of the compressed fuel-air mixture in one or more cylinders. Most gas stations offer three octane grades.
Regular usually 87 octane mid-grade usually 89 octane and premium usually 92 or 93. The ratings must be posted on bright yellow stickers on each gasoline. Are Yamaha engines compatible with E10 fuel.
All current models as well as most engines built since the late 1980s have been designed with fuel system components that are tolerant to fresh fuel containing ethanol up to 10 E10. Outboard fuel systems can still be affected by. Water dissolved gum varnish corrosion particles and dissolved.
I just bought a 250-HP Yamaha four-stroke outboard. A web review states this motor needs to run on mid-range 89-Octane gas. Where I live I cannot get more than 87-Octane gasoline.
Should be a concern. Locally we have lots of 225-HP Yamaha four-stroke engines running on this gas with no problems. This idea came from numerous recommendations from other anglers and my last dealer.
Now I read in the April issue of Bassmaster an article on 13 tips for fuel efficiency. A representative product manager for Yamaha states that Yamahas outboards are designed to run on gasoline with an octane rating of 87. Minimum required octane for all yamaha outboards except F250 and F350 89 octane is 86 octane.
Being that most fuel stations only carry 87 octane that is the closest you can get. Running high octane fuels in an engine designed for low octane fuel can result in incomplete combustion causing excessive carbon and a waste of money. What octane gas is best to use for a two stroke outboard motor.
The only time higher octane fuel is an advantage is if the engine is ECU controlled and even then it must have a knock sensor or other means of identifying detonation. Higher octane means less tendency to detonate and the ECU can then automatically provide increased ignition advance. I was advised to 1stay away from the cheapie gas as found at the local convenience store and only use a name brand gas such as Chevron Texaco etc2 use 89 octane only.
3use only Mercury Premium Plus 2-Cycle Outboard Oil for the 501 mixture and 4 always add OMC 24 Fuel Conditioner in the appropriate proportions to the fuel tank whenever adding gasoline. Yamaha does RECOMMEND that you run 89 octane or higher in that motor along with a handful of other motors. With that said it doesnt state anywhere that I.
As far as the various octane ratings of petrol thats the resistance to detonation of the petrol grade when compared to a test mixture of iso-octane and heptane. 91 iso 9hep gives an octane rating of 91 so a fuel that has a comparable detonation resistance to that mix is also rated 91 octane. If you own a Yamaha motorcycle incl.
Mopeds and ATVs built before 1990 or a Yamaha outboard motorWaveRunner built before 2003 it is recommended to only use ethanol-free Super grade petrol eg. If it says 87 octane run 87 octane unless you let your gas sit for a month or two. Gas looses octane rather quickly so if you let the boat sit for more than a month it might pay you to add as much 93 octane as you have old gas in the tank. I have an 8HP NissanTohatsu a 4HP Johnson and 2HP Yamaha.
To date I have been using 95 or 98 unleaded in the NissanTohatsu and I have been advised to use 95 or 98 in all 3 outboards. Some say 98 better than 95. Purchased a 21cc Shindaiwa whipper snipper this week and the dealer said ONLY use 91 octane in that - higher will cook it.
However some of the monster motors at the top end of the power scale will run better on high-octane premium gasoline. These engines come with recommendations to use higher octane to prevent knocking. Otherwise all the manufacturers we talked to said their motors were designed to run on gasoline with 87 octane.
Ethanol Fuel in Marine and Outboard Engines. Most boat engine manufacturers now approve of alcohol fuels 10 or lower but many have issued precautionary bulletins. Some older engine parts and fiberglass tanks will not tolerate the damaging affects of alcohol.

Most 2-strokes unless theyre a High Performance model or being raced will run fine on 87 octane regular unleaded.
