The only time higher octane fuel is an advantage is if the engine is ECU controlled and even then it must have a knock sensor or other means of identifying detonation. Higher octane means less tendency to detonate and the ECU can then automatically provide increased ignition advance. I was advised to 1stay away from the cheapie gas as found at the local convenience store and only use a name brand gas such as Chevron Texaco etc2 use 89 octane only.

As far as the various octane ratings of petrol thats the resistance to detonation of the petrol grade when compared to a test mixture of iso-octane and heptane. 91 iso 9hep gives an octane rating of 91 so a fuel that has a comparable detonation resistance to that mix is also rated 91 octane. If it says 87 octane run 87 octane unless you let your gas sit for a month or two. Gas looses octane rather quickly so if you let the boat sit for more than a month it might pay you to add as much 93 octane as you have old gas in the tank. I have an 8HP NissanTohatsu a 4HP Johnson and 2HP Yamaha.
To date I have been using 95 or 98 unleaded in the NissanTohatsu and I have been advised to use 95 or 98 in all 3 outboards. Some say 98 better than 95. Purchased a 21cc Shindaiwa whipper snipper this week and the dealer said ONLY use 91 octane in that - higher will cook it.
However some of the monster motors at the top end of the power scale will run better on high-octane premium gasoline. These engines come with recommendations to use higher octane to prevent knocking.
