Yamaha 225 four stroke problems. Problems with my 225 4-stroke Yamaha. Hello the number I posted69j-45318-01-00 came from the 2004 Marine Technical Guide page 3-60. The major differences in the bushing are the added chamfer on the OD to assist installation and the bushing ID is increased.
We have a 1994 22 Grady White and we just put a new 2007 225 4 stroke on last year. It has 56 hours. It ran fine the first 3 or 4 trips and then the next trip it started fine but cut off.
The 5 amp fuse blew and when we put in the spare it blew right away. We have had 3 different fuel pumps and the same problem continues. MY YAMAHA 225HP 4 STROKE IS USELES AFTER ONLY FIVE SEASONS The Short Version I paid over 16000 for a brand new Yamaha 225hp 4-stroke motor in March 2006.
After only five seasons of weekend use and with less than 600 hours of use and proper maintenance I am faced with a 12000 repair bill as this motor has corroded from the inside. It is enough to destroy cast iron within a short time as well as rot out copper fin tubes. Since this issue started to show up once 4 strokes were introduced I suspect that the design of the Yamaha motors perhaps created an unknown area where heated exhaust gases mixing with moisture in the dry side creates a corrosive condensate.
Recently the BoatUS Consumer Protection Bureau has been made aware of dozens of reports regarding serious corrosion problems in Yamaha outboards specifically 2000 to 2004 first-generation F225 models. Over time the issue usually surfaces after 500 to 700 hours of use the engines exhaust gases appear to corrode the exhaust tube and sometimes. Note there are thousands of F225s out there and they all arent failing due to corroded exhaust manifolds.
Agreeably 2003 F225s and earlier ones are more exposed to salt water corrosion the 2004 and above models have better paint and coatings. My starboard 225 HP yamaha outboard motor 4 stroke is running roughly. It barely runs at idle and knocks about every 4-6 seconds.
My 2003 Yamaha F-225 4 stroke was completely rebuilt under warranty Jan 2009. Never had a problem until it burnt a piston in Jan 2009. After engine was rebuilt by a Yamaha authorized dealer it hasnt idled properly since.
The engine will shut off at very low rpms and mosty at idle. First check the fuel system to ensure there is enough fuel in the tank. If the levels are low refuel it with the appropriate gasoline for your model.
Next check the fuel lines that connect the Yamaha outboard motor to the fuel tank. If you find any breaks or leaks you should stop using the engine. Welcome to the club I have the same issues with my 2002 Yamahas 225 four strokes.
My first corroded block port engine was in the same location than yours a hole below the thermostat housing and we though it was just bad luck one year ago today. The problem is that you cannot inspect other critical areas via this inspection method only. The power plant needs to be removed to inspect from the top of the mid-section downward. The problem was diagnosed over a month ago Dec.
