We have a 1994 22 Grady White and we just put a new 2007 225 4 stroke on last year. It has 56 hours. It ran fine the first 3 or 4 trips and then the next trip it started fine but cut off.

Since this issue started to show up once 4 strokes were introduced I suspect that the design of the Yamaha motors perhaps created an unknown area where heated exhaust gases mixing with moisture in the dry side creates a corrosive condensate.
Recently the BoatUS Consumer Protection Bureau has been made aware of dozens of reports regarding serious corrosion problems in Yamaha outboards specifically 2000 to 2004 first-generation F225 models. Over time the issue usually surfaces after 500 to 700 hours of use the engines exhaust gases appear to corrode the exhaust tube and sometimes. Note there are thousands of F225s out there and they all arent failing due to corroded exhaust manifolds.
Agreeably 2003 F225s and earlier ones are more exposed to salt water corrosion the 2004 and above models have better paint and coatings. My starboard 225 HP yamaha outboard motor 4 stroke is running roughly. It barely runs at idle and knocks about every 4-6 seconds.
My 2003 Yamaha F-225 4 stroke was completely rebuilt under warranty Jan 2009. Never had a problem until it burnt a piston in Jan 2009. After engine was rebuilt by a Yamaha authorized dealer it hasnt idled properly since.
The engine will shut off at very low rpms and mosty at idle. First check the fuel system to ensure there is enough fuel in the tank. If the levels are low refuel it with the appropriate gasoline for your model.
