I replace 4-5 water pumps a week at my shop bmws audis mb and if it is a papercardboard type gasket i always use a small amount of sealant on both sides of the gasket. I dont use silicone i forgot what its called. Its in a small brown bottle and you.

Next time use 3M yellow weatherstrip cement on the gasket to water pump side. Then use rtv on the gasket to block seal. Once the gasket is set to the pump it wont move.
Then when the pump fails in the futrue its real easy to remove the pump and throw it. You can use the engine silicone sealant on both sides of the gasket. You dont have to goop it on use it like a glue to keep it in place.
Best thing to do is use it to attach it to the pump first and then make the same small bead on the other side of the gasket but let it sit for about 10-15 minutes before you put it on. You dont need sealer on the pump gasket if you already put the sealer onto the pump. The gasket is good enough on the engine you dont need to put sealer on that.
Its a good idea to put it on the pump. Then it stays in place and doesnt move. Its sealed good against the pump.

I put the sealer or gasket maker as it was called on the water pump first making sure to put sealer around all the mounting bolt holes. Then I put the gasket on top of that.
