How to Replace a Shear Pin. Replacing a shear pin is very easy and only takes seconds to do. Never stick your hands inside the auger housing until the snowblower engine is safely turned off.
To locate the bolts look for where they intersect through the auger shaft. Use wrenches to loosen the bolt. Make sure they fit the size of the shear pin.
Drive the pin out using a pin punch of the correct sizeshould be able to drive the broken piece out through the larger hole. When fitting a new pin put the head side at the small hole not in the large hole. The large hole is there to make getting the old pin out easier.
If the pin is hardened you may have your hands full with the removal. First thing mount the shaft so the shear pin is vertical. Use a propane torch to heat up the shaft just hot not red hot.
Flame goes against the shaft not the pin so that the heat expands the shaft and breaks if free from the pin. Then once its hot hold ice cubes against the shear pin to cool it and shrink it. Use your 1 OEM shear bolt to mark where the grooves should go on your replacement bolts and then groove the replacement bolts.
I put the bolt in the drill press at low speed and with a very thin disk on the hand grinder put the grooves as marked on the bolts. You can make a dozen shear bolts in less then half an hour. However if the rear pin is too stubborn I remove the front pin instead.
To reconnect the collar slide the drive shaft end and collar into position and insert a ¼ X ¾ bolt through the connection. Use electricians tape to hold the bolt in position to maintain the alignment as you reinsert the spiral pin. Freeze and heat the roll pin to loosen it if the pin is in a small object.

Generally shear pins will fall off if they break but if some still remains remove the piece if it is wedged in there you may need a hammer and punch. Align the hole in the auger shaft with the hole in the gear case shaft. A good punch and a large hammer are the correct way to get these stuck pins out.
If the pin wont come out one way try hammering it out from the other side. With everything shut off and disengaged you can turn the impeller the inner part that pushes the snow out the chute turning the impeller will turn the auger. I was using a nail setter which I think is just deforming the pin.

It should come out easily. Sometimes they fall out completely when they break. In rare cases you may need to take a punch and a hammer and gently tap the shear pin out of the hole.
Align the drive shaft holes until you can slide the replacement shear pin into the hole. Place the flywheel puller on the wheel so that its bolts are aligned with the holes. Then tighten the nuts to gently pull the flywheel free exposing the shear pin and crankshaft.
Once the shear pin breaks the auger is no longer attached to the snowblower drive shaft and wont rotate. Replace the broken shear pin with a manufacturer-approved snowblower part. I think If you tried to attack it with a drill being only 18 in diameter you would end up with a broken drill and a broken roll pin. Because the pin is so small I have used a small torch tip to anneal them before right in the hole.
