IIRC the manual on my 07 59 says to drain at every fillup. Its a good practice to hit the drain about once month depending on how much you drive.

How often should you change a fuel water separator. I just had the dealer replace my fuel filter the dash was showing it at 14 life remaining and they said I should also replace my fuelwater separator as well. The fuel filter itself cost 150 and the fuelwater separator was going to cost another 150. I know youre supposed to drain the fuelwater separator regularly but I havent heard about actually.

Replace your fuel-water separator filter after every 50 hours of use. Dont reuse the filter once youve emptied it. If you suspect water has entered the fuel tank siphon off some fuel from the bottom of the tank and check it for water.
Filter every season or 100 hours whatever comes first. If she starts acting up on you the first thing I would do is change the filter no matter if 100 or 12 hour of use. Reason being you NEVER know what kind of crap you just loaded in your tank at the gas station.

Diesel fuel supply is a whole lot drier than it used to be but there is still a chance water can get into the tank from the filler neck or in the correct conditions condense from inside the tank.
